White House slams Amazon over display of tariff effect on prices

WASHINGTON: The White House on Tuesday slammed Amazon over reports it would soon tell consumers how much US President Donald Trump’s tariffs have contributed to the price tag on its goods. At a press conference marking the president’s 100 days in office, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters she had discussed Amazon’s reported move with the president and claimed it represented “another reason why Americans should buy American”. “This is a hostile and political act by Amazon”. “Why didn’t Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?” she added. Earlier Tuesday, Punchbowl News reported that the e-commerce site will soon start showing “how much Trump’s tariffs are adding to the price of each product,” citing a person familiar with the matter. US President Donald Trump also called Amazon Executive Chairman Jeff Bezos to complain about the report of Amazon’s plan to detail the tariff impact for customers, according to multiple me...

Will Catholic cardinals pick another outsider like Francis to be pope?

VATICAN CITY: When Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was elected in 2013 as Pope Francis, he was a near total Vatican outsider. He had never been a Vatican official, instead spending decades in local ministry. And he came from Argentina, the first pope from the Americas. As the world’s Catholic cardinals meet this week to discuss who should succeed Pope Francis, the deliberations may boil down to a simple choice: Do they want another outsider? Or is it time now for an insider, someone more familiar with the Vatican’s arcane ways of operating? “Pope Francis… shifted the Church’s attention to the outside world,” said John Thavis, former Rome bureau chief for the Catholic News Service , who covered three papacies. “Some cardinals will now be tempted to pick an insider, someone with the skills to manage church affairs more carefully and quietly than Pope Francis did.” Pope Francis, who died on April 21 aged 88, focused much of his papacy on outreach to places where the Church was not traditional...

Oilers put Kings on notice with dominant Game 5 win: ‘Got them where we want them’

LOS ANGELES — Suddenly, the black picket fence along the centre line has lost a few teeth, and the Edmonton Oilers are skating the puck from their own end into the offensive zone in total control, time, after time, after time. For some reason, the stingiest team in the National Hockey League on home ice is now bleeding chances off the rush, can’t control more than one shift in a row, and has completely lost control of their own net front — three tenets of the Los Angeles Kings’ game all season long. “What’s the explanation?” said Kings head coach Jim Hiller. “They were stronger. They beat us in every area of the game. “They were just better. In every way.” The Oilers grabbed this series by the throat Tuesday night in Southern California with a performance so dominant, the only questions left were whether this 3-1 victory was the best game the Oilers have played since Christmas, or must we go all the way back to last spring’s Stanley Cup Final to find a compa...

Pakistan shoots down Indian quadcopter violating airspace near LoC: state media

The Pakistan Army on Tuesday shot down an Indian quadcopter drone near the Line of Control (LoC) in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), state media reported, as tensions between the two countries linger on in the wake of the Pahalgam attack. The April 22 attack killed 26 men , mostly tourists, and was one of the deadliest armed attacks in the disputed Himalayan region since 2000. Kashmir Resistance, also known as The Resistance Front, said it “unequivocally” denied involvement in the attack, after an initial message that claimed responsibility. India, without offering any evidence, has implied cross-border linkages of the attackers, while Pakistan has strongly denied any involvement. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a neutral probe into the incident. “Pakistan has successfully shot down an Indian quadcopter along the Line of Control, thwarting a violation of its airspace,” state-run Radio Pakistan and PTV News reported, citing security sources. Specifying the location,...

Power returns to most of Spain, Portugal after massive blackout

Lights flickered back to life in Spain and Portugal on Tuesday after a massive blackout hit the Iberian peninsula stranding passengers in trains and hundreds of elevators while millions saw phone and internet coverage die. Electricity had been restored to more than 90 per cent of mainland Spain early on Tuesday, the REE power operator said. Lights came on again in Madrid and in Portugal’s capital. Barely a corner of the peninsula, which has a joint population of almost 60 million people, escaped the blackout. But no firm cause for the shutdown has yet emerged, though wild rumours spread on messaging networks about cyber attacks. Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said the source of the outage was “probably in Spain”. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said “all the potential causes” were being analysed and warned the public “not to speculate” because of the risk of “misinformation”. Sanchez said about 15,000 megawatts of electricity, more than half of the power being cons...

Malaysia’s Johor hockey association seeks $10,000 from PHF over extra expenses in 2023 event

LAHORE: In an upsetting development for Pakistan, the Johor Hockey Association in Malaysia has written a letter to the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) asking for a sum of $10,349.35 while citing extra accommodation and meals that were provided to the country’s junior team which took part in the 11th Sultan of Johor Invitational Cup in Johor Bahru in 2023. As players and officials of the participating teams were eligible for free accommodation and meals during their stay for the event in Johor Bahru, then PHF president retired Brig Khalid Sajjad Khokhar with his close relatives and friends — five persons — also went to Malaysia to witness the matches. But the organisers had not included them in the list of persons who had been invited. A letter written on Feb 27, 2025, a copy of which is available with Dawn , was received at the PHF but addressed to the junior team’s manager, sought a deposit of 45,770 Malaysian ringgit ($10,349.35) for the hotel stay and meals. When contacted, PHF ...

HBL PSL 2025: Skipper Babar steers Peshawar Zalmi to seven-wicket victory against Lahore Qalandars

LAHORE: Peshawar Zalmi needed their skipper to stand tall. Babar Azam duly obliged. In front of his home crowd, against the home team, Babar helped his side chase down a low but tricky score at the Gaddafi Stadium with an unbeaten 56 as Zalmi crushed Lahore Qalandars by seven wickets to record their second victory of the HBL Pakistan Super League season on Thursday. Zalmi’s four-pronged pace attack had laid the platform after they tore into the Qalandars line-up, reducing them to 34-5 at one point before the home side managed to post 129 all out thanks to Sikandar Raza’s half-century after being put into bat in the first game of the season in Lahore. The Qalandars then got a sniff when they reduced Zalmi to 40-3 but Babar proved to be a thorn in their ambitions of registering their third win of the campaign. The right-hander struck seven fours and a six in his 42-ball knock with Hussain Talat providing him able support with a half-century; the duo sharing an unbroken 93-run sta...

NFL Draft Round 1 Takeaways: New head coaches make their mark

The first round of the 2025 NFL Draft is officially in the books.  All 32 franchises entered the night holding their original first-round picks, but it didn’t take long for that to change. After the Tennessee Titans took quarterback Cam Ward first overall, as expected, the Jacksonville Jaguars jumped into the Cleveland Browns’ No. 2 spot to select cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter. The New York Giants rounded out the top three by taking edge rusher Abdul Carter. No great surprises there.  The top of the class of 2025 doesn’t boast quite the same star power in the form of generational talent, but Thursday night still brought plenty of interesting moments.  Here are our top takeaways from Round 1.  New head coaches make their mark with identity-establishing picks  After another big spin of the coaching carousel earlier this off-season, we’re starting to see teams’ new identities take shape as new head coaches begin to bring their visions to li...
